Budget committee backs moving Wells justice-court bailiff to consolidated courts, recommends no immediate backfill

The Elko County Budget Committee voted March 12 to recommend that the Board of County Commissioners transfer a vacant Wells justice-court bailiff position into the consolidated courts’ budget and make it a roving bailiff position serving outlying courts.
Christina (Consolidated Courts staff) explained the request: the Wells bailiff retired in January and the consolidated courts want the position moved to Elko so the person can be assigned where needed — Wells, Wendover, Carlin or other outlying courts. “Essentially, we're just moving the Wells bailiff who is we don't have anyone in that position over to Elko and they're gonna be a roving bailiff taking care of all of the outlying courts plus anything we need here,” Christina said.
Committee members discussed workload and alternatives. Amanda (Budget committee member) questioned whether the county needed seven justice-court bailiffs, noting scheduling flexibility and intermittent jury or domestic-violence trials. Christina and other court representatives said Justice Court bailiffs remain busy and that the consolidated-courts model was intended to create efficiencies and permit cross‑coverage.
The committee approved a motion to forward the consolidation recommendation to the county commissioners but asked that the position remain unfilled for now so staff can supply additional workload data. Committee members asked the courts to provide counts of hearings and domestic-violence trials that would justify filling the position.
