Somersworth HDC to host preservation training after state grant; dates under consideration

Somersworth — Somersworth Historic District Commission staff reported on Jan. 22 that the commission received a Certified Local Government grant from the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources to host a Commissions Assistance and Mentoring Program (CAMP) event through the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions.
Miss Myers (HDC staff) described the proposed training as a one‑day, interactive program — typically held on a Friday or Saturday — that can cover up to four topics, including design review exercises and alternative materials. The training is aimed at commissioners, staff and local practitioners and will include practice design‑review exercises and facilitated discussion of the commission’s guidelines.
Possible dates mentioned for the CAMP event were Friday–Saturday, June 6–7 or June 13–14; staff asked commissioners to respond to a scheduling poll and suggested holding a Saturday to increase attendance. Miss Myers noted the grant requires the work be completed by June 30, and the commission discussed avoiding conflicts with the city’s children’s festival.
Staff also suggested using the CAMP session to run a design‑review workshop and a “postmortem” review of recent projects to help the commission identify ordinance or guideline updates. Commissioners generally supported the idea and asked staff to circulate a shortlist of topics and dates.
The grant‑funded training will be open to other New Hampshire historic district commissions; staff said the event will be interactive and intended to build review skills and confidence among commissioners.
