The Milford Board of Selectmen discussed the role and short‑term responsibilities of the interim town administrator and provided input to Municipal Resources, Inc. (MRI), the consultant hired to run a national recruitment for a permanent town administrator.
MRI representative Mike Magnan (on the Zoom line) asked the board to describe the skills and challenges they wanted in a new administrator. Board members emphasized municipal experience, familiarity with New Hampshire laws, financial competence and experience managing department heads. Several members stressed interpersonal skills: someone who can work with five selectmen, build team cohesiveness, be responsive to public inquiries and follow through on tasks.
Board members also asked MRI about the application process and confidentiality. MRI said applications should be submitted to MRI and that the firm would collect and screen candidates before recommending semi‑finalists. Board members asked to have access to resumes during the process; MRI agreed to provide packages while maintaining confidentiality for active applicants.
Separately, the board discussed interim town administrator duties and the possibility of the police chief (Chief Mike Viola) serving as interim TA. Members suggested a flexible arrangement in which the interim TA would oversee ongoing projects, meet weekly with department heads, and provide a weekly status memo to the board. The board instructed the interim administrator to coordinate with department heads to delegate operational tasks where appropriate and to report back on necessary hours and a possible stipend; compensation and any stipend would be discussed in non‑public session as needed.
Ending: MRI will continue recruitment, staff will accept and screen applications, and the interim town administrator will begin weekly status updates to the board while staff and the board refine the interim duties and any necessary compensation changes.
