School Board approves equipment, construction and safety bids and multiple personnel actions

The Rochester School Board voted on April 10 to approve multiple bids and personnel items recommended by the finance and operations committees, including technology purchases, fire-safety work, safety devices funded by a grant, a backhoe loader, and the sale of modular classrooms.
The board approved a purchase of desktop computers for $21,215.52 (Comp Coo Government Inc.), a rack-body vehicle for $88,342.98 (McGovern Municipal), and two fire-panel contracts: a $110,400 contract with Nagam Electric LLC for the McCollin fire panel and a $90,710 Nagam Electric LLC contract for Chamberlain. The board also approved a grant-funded contract for vape-detection devices (ByteSpeed LLC) totaling $74,248; the district identified that purchase as supported by the Jewel grant. The operations bid for a backhoe loader (Alta Equipment) for $92,000 was also approved.
Separately, the operations committee recommended and the board approved the sale and removal of three modular classrooms at Chamberlain Street School for $1, with a restoration plan for the land proposed as part of the sale. The board discussed the disposal option as a cost-saving measure and authorized the district to seek buyers who would remove the units and restore the site.
The board also approved numerous personnel items presented by committees: retirements and resignations (including custodial and administrative positions), nominations for administrators and teachers for the 2025'26 school year, and approvals of continued and multi-year teacher contracts. Sheila Colson was approved as the Spalding High School athletic director. Specific personnel names and titles were listed in the board packet and were approved by voice vote.
Most motions were approved by routine voice votes following committee recommendations. Several board members asked for clarification on scheduling changes tied to facilities work and for timely communication to coaches and affected staff about athletic-field availability.
