New Canaan police commission approves outside employment requests, training course approvals and uniform invoices

At its March 19 meeting the New Canaan Police Commission voted to approve two outside-employment requests, two college-course approval/reimbursement requests and the department's uniform-clothing invoices filed for the meeting.

Deputy Chief Walsh told the commission he wanted "to explore part time outside employment, as a private consultant" on policy, procedure, management and security matters and said any work would occur "in my off time" and not exceed part-time hours. The commission approved his request by voice vote.

Lieutenant Jason Ferraro asked for permission to accept part-time work providing executive protection and driving through a company he named; he said it would be "probably 8 to 16 hours a week" and would occur during off-duty hours. The commission approved that request by voice vote.

The commission also approved course-approval and reimbursement requests: Lieutenant Milligan for a master's-level business administration course (noted that reimbursement is contingent on successful completion) and Sergeant Lopez for a fourth course toward a master's in cyber threat intelligence. Commissioners emphasized the department's interest in continuing education and noted cybercrime and financial crime as increasing enforcement areas.

Finally, the commission approved the uniform and clothing invoices for the 03/19/2025 meeting after review; commissioners said the invoices "seemed in order." All motions were adopted by voice vote; the transcript records unanimous "aye" responses but does not list individual tallies.
