Selectmen award $87,880 contract to rebuild Waveney Park South‑Avenue trail

The Board of Selectmen on March 25 approved a contract with AJ's Landscaping to reconstruct the trail that runs from the South Avenue entrance through to the Farm Road trailhead in Waveney Park. The low bid was $76,380; the board authorized a 15% contingency ($11,500) for a total of $87,880.
Scope and materials: The project covers approximately 2,750 linear feet of trail. Staff said the work will use a processed aggregate “Waveny mix” (a mixed 57 and 3/8-inch stone combined on site) that has been used successfully on earlier park trail sections and should provide a 10‑year service life with periodic top dressing.
Contractor selection and schedule: Eight bidders were solicited and AJ’s submitted the low bid; the DPW noted AJ's prior work in area towns and experience bidding similar trail projects. Staff estimated 2–4 weeks of on-site construction time but said site conditions and length of the stretch make scheduling variable. The trails will remain open to users during work; contractors were asked to be cognizant of trail users and maintain safe access.
Funding and next steps: Funds are available in the Waveney Trails capital account. When additional funding is secured the DPW said it will return to bid the adjacent trail segment on the opposite side of the park to complete the frontage.
Outcome: The motion to award the contract was moved, seconded and recorded as unanimous.
