New Canaan police commission approves Caffeine & Carburetors dates, OKs Special Olympics torch run kickoff

The New Canaan Police Commission on March 19 unanimously approved two dates for the town's Caffeine & Carburetors car-show events and granted permission for a Law Enforcement Torch Run kickoff tied to the Special Olympics on June 6.

The Caffeine & Carburetors organizer Doug asked the commission to "move ahead with the events," seeking approval for June 22 in town and Oct. 19 at Waveney, and said planning is proceeding with town staff. A speaker identified only as Paul said the group had met with organizers and had "no objections" and that Parks and Recreation gave unanimous approval. The commission approved the dates by voice vote.

Officer Kelly Coughlin described the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run as "a great event that's gone on for a long time" and said it raises funds and awareness for Special Olympics Connecticut. Coughlin said the run would include a kickoff in downtown New Canaan and that the route would start at South and Elm and continue down South Avenue toward Darien. The commission approved the proposed use of the downtown area for the June 6 kickoff; exact start times will be provided to the department once confirmed.

Both event approvals were handled on the consent of the commission with motions, seconds and unanimous voice votes recorded in the public meeting.

Organizers were instructed to continue coordinating logistics with town departments and police as they finalize start times and safety details.
