West Windsor council signals urgent affordable-housing steps, moves to closed session

Councilmembers and the mayor told residents at the Jan. 15 reorganization meeting that West Windsor faces near-term deadlines under the state’s fourth round of affordable housing rules and that the governing body would act quickly to meet them.
Councilmember Linda Jeevers outlined the timetable and legal obligations, telling attendees the fourth round covers a 10-year period beginning in 2025 and that a binding resolution on the township’s present and prospective need numbers will appear at the Jan. 27 business meeting and must be approved no later than Jan. 31. She also said the township must adopt a housing element and fair share plan by June 30, 2025.
Mayor Hemant Marathi and other councilmembers said the administration would post deadlines and background materials on the municipal website and that the council would continue to work with legal and planning staff. The council later voted to go into closed session under N.J.S.A. 10:4-12 to discuss affordable housing; the roll-call for entering closed session was recorded as yes for Garwas, Jeevers, Boyce, Whitfield and Mandel.
Ending: Council members said they will provide more substantive updates after the closed session and at the next business meeting; residents were advised that more information on deadlines and process will be posted on the township website.
