Mariposa History Museum leads 170th birthday presentation; board adopts commemorative resolution

The Mariposa History Museum and History Center presented a heritage program and materials Tuesday to mark the 170th anniversary of Mariposa County’s founding in February 1850.
Joanna Ransom and Richard Westfall of the museum provided a short historical narrative about the county’s Gold Rush origins, civic groups, early mines and the links to Yosemite. Westfall cited 19th-century mine output and said tourism and agriculture are key modern industries. Joanna Ransom said the museum brought historic county records and invited the public to free admission and a family celebration on March 22.
The board adopted a resolution recognizing the county’s 170th birthday by unanimous vote (motion by Supervisor Toso, second Supervisor Poe). Representatives from state legislative and congressional offices and the California State Senate presented certificates and congratulatory resolutions; the board accepted proclamations from Congressman Tom McClintock’s office and Assemblymember David T. Gonipa’s office as part of the ceremony.
Ending: Supervisors and museum staff encouraged residents to visit the museum, attend the March celebration and join a planned dedication at Agua Fria in April.
