The Board approved creation of a countywide Legal Intern classification to help create a pipeline into attorney roles across Inyo County’s offices.
County Counsel and the District Attorney explained the classification is intended to support recruitment from law schools and to give departments a standard job description they can use if funding is available. The classification can be used by county counsel, the district attorney and child-support services; pay and appointment details will depend on departmental funding and budget approval.
County staff said the idea came from prior leadership cohort work and from outreach such as a UCLA recruitment visit; they noted several prospective candidates are waiting for the classification to be approved so departments can bring them on. Supervisors and staff discussed that internship programs require supervisory time and program oversight; those tradeoffs are expected and were acknowledged in the board discussion.
The motion to approve the job description and to authorize departments to hire legal interns if funding is identified passed by voice vote.
