Advisory board flags fire staffing funding and staging near drinking-water source

Municipal manager Dietch and correspondence from Chief Rauscher, read at the Daie Community Advisory Board's April 9 meeting, said a fire-department needs assessment has been completed and that the department is discussing returning a seasonal responder/brush-truck position to the Dye area if the municipality can fund it.
Manager Dietch's message, read aloud at the meeting, said Mayor Bass indicated he would work on a budget amendment to restore funding for a seasonal responder and that the position would need about $40,000 for the season. The message said the seasonal position would perform EMS, fire and search-and-rescue duties and that the person who held the role last year would return if funding is secured.
Separately, board members raised a concern that the fire department is staging equipment at Matthews Creek upstream of the community's drinking-water intake. Members said they were worried about potential contamination and asked that staff discuss placement and alternatives with fire management. One board member said the staging area was close enough to the water source to risk permanent impacts if fuel or other contaminants entered the supply.
Board members agreed follow-up was needed: to ask municipal staff for clarification on the budget request and to discuss safer staging locations with fire department staff. No budget amendment or formal municipal action was taken at the advisory-board meeting; the board recorded the manager's update and added follow-up tasks to its work plan.
