Kitsap commissioners proclaim Volunteer Appreciation Week, National County Government Month and other observances

Kitsap County commissioners on Monday adopted a set of proclamations recognizing volunteers, county government and public‑safety and public‑health observances.
Rebecca Pirtle, Kitsap County volunteer services coordinator, presented the Volunteer Appreciation Week proclamation and a summary of county volunteer activity in 2024. Pirtle told commissioners that 6,933 volunteers contributed 149,372 hours countywide in 2024; using the Independent Sector valuation, she said the monetary equivalent was calculated as $6,000,016. Her presentation listed program‑level figures: 1,487 volunteers in the Adopt‑a‑Spot litter cleanup program logging 3,560 hours and collecting about 2,400 bags of litter; more than 46,000 hours contributed by parks volunteers during 377 work parties; roughly 6,668 hours from sheriff’s office volunteers including citizens on patrol and cadets; and nearly 30,000 hours from emergency management volunteers including community emergency response teams and search‑and‑rescue units.
The board then unanimously adopted the following proclamations: • Proclaim April 20–26, 2025 as Kitsap County Volunteer Appreciation Week to recognize volunteer contributions across county departments and advisory groups. • Proclaim April 2025 as National County Government Month, joining the National Association of Counties’ campaign to highlight county services. • Proclaim April 2025 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Kitsap County (resolution brought forward by Department of Human Services and local advocacy organizations). • Designate May 2025 as Kitsap County Building Safety Month; department staff outlined outreach plans including an amnesty period in May for some missed permits and planned public workshops.
Commissioners praised volunteers and county staff; the board moved to adopt each resolution by voice vote and all passed unanimously.
