At the April 8 meeting the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners directed county staff to work with the local farmers market’s vendors and customers to collect information about needs and preferences as the county plans redevelopment of the market site to accommodate a new fire training facility.
Commissioner Prizia moved the directive and commissioners seconded the motion after a short discussion about process and roles. The motion asks staff to undertake a needs assessment with vendors and customers to help the county explore next steps and to coordinate that outreach alongside the county’s phased planning for the fire‑rescue training site.
Commissioners emphasized that the exercise should produce information useful for county policy and possible future contracting arrangements. "I would like for them to actually be taking the lead with the county's help as opposed to the county taking the lead with their help," Commissioner Cornell said, urging that the market operators remain active participants. Several commissioners said they support examining systemwide farmers market needs across the county — not only the downtown market — and suggested that the process could inform broader local food‑system planning and the county’s food hub feasibility work.
County staff were directed to survey vendors and customers, return with findings and coordinate timing so outreach coincides with the facility planning timeline. The motion passed on a voice vote.
