Board adopts 'Flat Mine Road' name after tribal consultation; some residents sought alternative

The Butte County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 11 adopted a resolution renaming a private road in the Forest Ranch/Horseshoe Bend area to Flat Mine Road under the state's geographical-name revision process established by Assembly Bill 2022.
County staff explained that the state-mandated process required tribal consultation on replacement names and that the proposed Flat Mine Road was selected through that consultation and local screening to avoid duplication or confusion for emergency responders. A resident who addressed the board said she and neighbors were "happy that they're changing the name" but asked whether a different name could be considered because "the road's not really flat" and the word "mine" felt off to some neighbors.
Director Danalek (county naming staff) explained that any alternate name would have to be resubmitted for tribal consultation and meet the state's criteria and local emergency-services screening. The board voted to adopt the Flat Mine Road name as presented.
The board's action formalizes the state-directed renaming and staff will record the change with county records and notify addressing and emergency-response partners.
