Commissioners ask for updated summary on 32304 disparities and local investments

The Leon County Board of County Commissioners on April 8 directed staff to prepare an updated summary and options report on ZIP code 32304, a neighborhood the board previously identified in 2019 as having concentrated socioeconomic challenges.

Commissioner Proctor asked the board to relaunch a review that began in 2019, saying the original effort produced a detailed report on housing, education, employment, infant mortality and income disparities and that the county should “get back out in front” of the issue now, given recent federal and state policy shifts that could worsen local conditions. Commissioner Parker, who said she lives in the 32304 ZIP code, asked that the updated summary specifically include a comparison of city and county investments in 32304 versus other ZIP codes in Leon County.

County staff told the board they could compile the updated summary, include prior board actions and recent items, and present options for how the county might increase targeted support. Commissioners praised Proctor’s previous leadership producing the original report and voted unanimously to direct staff to return with an update.
