Committee reviews columbarium site concepts, recommends hiring landscape architect for design phase

The Town of Concord Cemetery Committee reviewed conceptual designs and site options for a proposed columbarium in Sleepy Hollow and agreed the next step should be to engage a landscape architect to prepare more detailed plans.

Presenters described an identified site on the knoll, showed multiple modular and low-profile columbarium examples, and noted existing site features—an asphalt walkway, granite stairs and a nearby pond—that should inform design. Committee members said any columbarium should be accessible for interment services and for visitors, and should integrate natural materials and existing contours to avoid being visually discordant with the knoll and adjacent areas.

Committee members discussed approximate capacity estimates from examples shown (presenter estimated roughly 50–100 niches depending on configuration) and noted the subcommittee will pause as members change: Brian will be leaving after the meeting and the presenter will depart in May. Committee members suggested funding could come from town trust funds or revenue from niche sales, but no formal funding decision was recorded at the meeting.

No formal vote was taken on funding or site selection; committee members asked staff to refine the concept and to scope a contract for a landscape architect to produce design drawings suitable for engineering and construction estimates. That scoping and any funding requests will be considered at future meetings.
