Tourist Development Council staff reported a marketing win, strong earned-media impressions and steady growth in sports tourism while asking the council to support outreach to local businesses.
Michelle, the TDC marketing coordinator, said the county won an Adrian Award and reported estimated earned-media impressions from January and February at 51,560,866 with an estimated advertising value of $476,937.98; she also said the campaign's top-performing ads produced a 5.2% click-through rate, five times the industry benchmark. "We were also in Southern Living as well," Michelle said while reviewing placements. She also announced two new hotels in Lake City's inventory: a Courtyard by Marriott and a TownePlace Suites by Marriott.
On the sports side, Chris (sports coordinator) reported that county athletic events have brought hundreds of teams and thousands of participants to Columbia County since January; he estimated the TDC has hosted roughly 250 teams across tournaments that could represent close to 3,000 youth athletes and accompanying family members. "Sports truly has a big impact when it's coming into the county," he said, noting concession-stand proceeds and hotel room nights as local economic benefits.
Staff described a plan to offer local businesses free profiles via the PlayEasy platform so visitors and rights-holders could find restaurants, shops and service businesses during tournaments; a pilot workshop will let businesses set up listings and promotional offers at no cost.
Board members raised operational issues that accompany growth. Members and staff discussed parking and pedestrian safety during large tournaments; the TDC noted that the county police and some events provide on-site security and that organizers sometimes pay admission at gates. Board members suggested options such as better traffic direction, paid parking or working with right-holders to manage crowds, but staff said they are cautious about adding fees that might deter groups.
Public commenters and several event organizers attended and spoke: Marilee Jipson, an event organizer, described on-site marketing and encouraged coordination with hoteliers; Andrea Thomas from Stephen Foster noted vendor-space changes at the Florida Folk Festival after recent hurricanes and described new summer camp programming with partner agencies including FWC and forestry.
Staff said they would continue marketing and outreach to local businesses, maintain grant follow-up and work with law enforcement and event organizers on parking and safety plans for large tournaments.
