Committee members discussed ongoing recruitment challenges and the prospect that several members will leave at the end of the current term. "We're gonna be way short of members, if a couple more people leave, and I'm proposing to take the number of members of the committee from 9 to 7," a member said during the meeting. The proposer then moved that the committee recommend the charter change to town staff; the motion was seconded and put to a vote. One member announced an abstention during the roll call; other members indicated support and the motion was advanced to be recommended to the town manager/staff liaison (referred to in meeting as "Wendy").
Members emphasized the recommendation is a request to staff rather than a unilateral charter change: committee members said the committee would recommend reducing the chartered size and asked that staff pursue the formal amendment process. One member noted that the committee itself does not make the final determination: "It's actually not our decision," another member said, noting the charter amendment would proceed through the town's formal process.
The committee asked staff to forward the recommendation to the appropriate town official for consideration and to provide guidance on the formal steps required to change the charter.
