Dickinson Clay Target Club describes growth, youth program and plans for clubhouse

The Dickinson Clay Target Club gave a public presentation April 15 describing its student program, membership growth and plans to construct a new year-round clubhouse with a simulation room and hunter-safety training.
Blaine Ducart, DCTC president and head coach, said the club operates a student program next to the Crooked Crane Trail at 3821 Fifteenth Avenue Southwest and has run a youth program for six years. Club members and parents including Carrie Roller and two student shooters (Jaylee Roller and Sierra Sitton) spoke about the sport’s impact on confidence, discipline and teamwork. Sitton and Roller described how the sport emphasizes mechanics and mental focus and said the program taught firearm safety to many participants who had limited prior experience.
The club said it is a newly formed 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Club leaders said 65 high-school students — grades 6 through 12 — are participating in the spring league, up from about 40 the prior spring. The club hosts Tuesday and Thursday evening open-shoot sessions and Sunday afternoons during the summer; it also runs private and corporate events from June to October. Leaders asked for community sponsorships to assist fundraising for the new clubhouse.
Ending: Commissioners commended the program and wished the club luck; the commission chair and members encouraged residents to visit the range.
