Council members described the action as the first step in a longer-term plan under which the town would progressively take over maintenance for school district fields. Council members and staff said the arrangement is expected to produce operational efficiencies and improved upkeep for school fields, and that the Board of Education governing body planned a corresponding resolution at its meeting.
Supporters of the measure emphasized an established collaborative relationship between town and school staff. The council noted the shared-service resolution is contingent on parallel action by the school board and said both bodies had coordinated on the agreement language.
The resolution passed on a recorded vote. The council characterized the agreement as enhancing the town's capacity to maintain athletic and recreational fields and as complementary to broader parks and recreation capital projects mentioned in the budget presentation.
