Westfield proclaims April 2025 as Parkinson’s Awareness Month; local support group outlines events

The proclamation, read at the meeting, noted Parkinson’s disease as “a chronic progressive neurological disease” and recited national prevalence and cost estimates included in the council’s prepared proclamation text. After the proclamation, a representative of the Westfield Parkinson’s group thanked the mayor and council and described the group’s schedule and plans.
“On behalf of the Parkinson’s group in Westfield, I want to thank you, Mayor Brindle and the council for bringing us this proclamation,” the group representative said. The speaker said the local group meets in a hybrid format — in person and virtually — with a regular meeting on the second Monday of each month and virtual gatherings on other Mondays. An instructor from the local YMCA leads a 45-minute fitness session during the meetings.
The group announced local events for April, including: an information table at the Westfield Memorial Library on April 11 (World Parkinson’s Day) from 1 to 4 p.m.; a fundraising walk in Mindy Watson Park to raise money for the Parkinson’s Unity Walk; and participation in the global “Spark the Night” initiative to light up buildings in blue for Parkinson’s awareness.
