Representatives of Food & Water Watch asked the Long Branch City Council on March 26 to pass a resolution supporting the New Jersey Superfund Act (S3545/A4696), saying the measure would require polluters to pay for environmental damage and could provide funds for municipal climate adaptation projects.
Susan Makaitis, speaking for Food & Water Watch, said the bill had passed relevant committees in the New Jersey Legislature and compared it to similar laws in New York and Vermont. She said a successful Superfund Act would create a funding source municipalities could apply to for climate adaptation and resilience projects and asked the council to support the bill by resolution; she provided a summary resolution in the meeting packet and told council members that Amanda (the clerk) had the materials.
Enes Banggood, a Long Branch resident, spoke in support of Makaitis’s request and urged the council to consider the bill in light of recent, widely reported climate disasters. Mayor Palone replied that the council would “definitely look into it,” and staff confirmed receipt of the materials for council review. The meeting record does not show the council adopting a resolution that night; the request was made during public comment and will require a future council action to be placed on the agenda and adopted.
