Council hears options to purchase downtown public art; formal decision deferred

City cultural‑arts staff gave the council an update on four public artworks currently displayed on Main Street and described the process to make any of them permanent acquisitions.
Warren (staff member) told council the downtown public‑art program had four pieces under consideration and that artists agreed to a 25% city commission on sales. He said last year the city received approximately $78,000 in total from four pieces, and that one sculpture — the “farmer” — had already been designated for placement at the Market Pavilion under prior council direction.
Warren said other proposed locations discussed previously included the All‑Abilities Park for the hummingbird, the Civic Center plaza for the large bronze piece, and a still‑to‑be‑finalized site for another work.
Councilors were asked to take time to consider whether the city should purchase any of the works and to direct staff if they wanted the issue scheduled for action. Warren and the mayor said several pieces will be deinstalled in early May when the next round of artwork arrives; the new pieces are set to be installed and receive a public reception on May 9.
Councilor Rogers asked whether the public can find purchase information; staff said a dedicated city webpage is available and QR codes on each sculpture link to the purchase pages. Several councilors encouraged staff to bring a formal agenda item with prices and recommended locations at the next meeting so the council could act if it chose to do so.
No purchase motion was made at the work session; staff will place the item on the council agenda for formal consideration and possible action.
