A group of South Jacksonville Beach residents raised the condition of the Carver Center playground during public comment at the April 7 council meeting and asked the council to fulfill an earlier promise to update the facility.
Janice Smith, a resident of Fourth Avenue South, told the council the playground equipment has aged, some parts are unsafe, and promised improvements slated for the 2024–25 fiscal year had not materialized. "We were excited about the potential upgrades which would not only enhance the park's appeal but also make it a safer and accessible and more enjoyable place for all," Smith said in her public comment.
Councilmember Wagner responded with an update: the city has completed the site survey, the final playset design will fit the site, and installation is expected to start in about six weeks once manufacturing parts arrive. Wagner said delays at manufacturers have affected multiple park projects and apologized for the slow timetable. He said staff will follow up with specifics and provide the resident group a blueprint of the final design after the meeting.
Ending: Residents asked for a timeline and allocation of funds; staff provided the six-week installation estimate and committed to follow-up with the neighborhood on design details.
