Council approves artist-designed mural for pier parking-lot dumpster enclosure

The Jacksonville Beach City Council voted April 7 to approve a mural on the pier parking-lot dumpster enclosure, selecting artwork by Lauren Klaus.
Tyler Mobs, the Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) coordinator, presented the committee-recommended design and explained the public art advisory committee’s feedback. The artist updated the design to make the central “jaws” motif more vibrant and revised the font to fit the neon aesthetic discussed by the committee. Mobs said the artist will also include a signature and a social media hashtag chosen by the communications manager.
Councilmembers praised the number and quality of submissions; Councilmember Golding noted the geographic diversity of applicants and said she was pleased that several artists were local to the Beaches area. Councilmember Wouters asked whether the selected artist is from Jacksonville Beach; Mobs said the artist is from Ponte Vedra and that three applicants were from Jacksonville Beach.
A roll-call vote approved the mural 6–1. The meeting record shows Councilmember Wouters cast the lone no vote; Councilmembers Golding, Horn, Janssen, Sutton, Wagner and Mayor Hoffman voted yes. Councilmembers directed staff to proceed with contracting and implementation under the approved design.
Ending: Staff will finalize and execute the agreement with the selected artist and coordinate installation and any required materials or permits.
