Concord committee to invite student essayists for youth focus group and consider publishing essays

The Town of Concord Permanent Memorial Subcommittee agreed Jan. 23 to pursue outreach to student authors who entered the 250th anniversary essay contest, beginning with the five winning essays and extending invitations to the larger group of 38 entrants for a youth focus group.

Committee members described the essays as hopeful and aligned with the subcommittee’s goals of honoring the past while imagining Concord’s future. Members discussed steps to preserve and publicize the essays — including producing a short bound booklet of the winning entries, recording readings on video, and inviting students to read their work on or around the April 19 events tied to the town’s 250th activities.

Nancy Frizzella Lee volunteered to contact Holly (organizer at the Right Tavern community engagement group) to confirm permissions and to collect student contact information; she said she would draft a short letter inviting students to meet and to discuss whether they wanted to participate in publication or readings. Committee members offered technical and logistical support: one member offered to bind sample copies, another to print the essays for review, and multiple members suggested using 51 Walden or the Right Tavern space for small events if needed. The committee discussed staging short readings or a pop‑up distribution on April 19, and noted the April 19 agenda currently includes a 2 p.m. placeholder for permanent memorial activity.

The committee did not adopt a formal ordinance or contract related to publication or event logistics at this meeting. Instead the group recorded next steps and responsibilities: Nancy will contact Holly and the students, prepare a letter and proposed meeting, and report progress back to the subcommittee; a subcommittee member offered to produce initial printed/bound samples for review.
