Committee presses for PFAS sampling plan, wants replacement well included

Members of the Town of Concord 2229 Main Street Site Committee discussed the 2024 annual groundwater report and asked for clearer plans for PFAS sampling in upcoming monitoring events.
Committee members said the April 2024 sampling predated new PFAS guidance and that the consultant is planning a comprehensive sampling event in April 2026. The committee asked whether PFAS sampling would be added to the 2025 annual sampling, and requested a figure showing the wells selected for PFAS sampling so the committee can assess geographic coverage.
Members highlighted one well, GZW‑72 (also discussed as a replaced well labeled MW‑BS7‑2), where earlier 2019 sampling recorded a high PFOA hit (reported as over 200 — the committee said that result was attributed in 2019 to potential cross‑contamination from sampling equipment and needs confirmation). The committee asked Maximus/Lehi (consultant) to resample the replacement well as part of PFAS testing and to confirm whether the well will be sampled in 2025 or be reserved for the 2026 comprehensive event.
Bruce and other task force members were noted as having previously commented that PFAS risk at the site appeared low based on past sampling; committee members said that view is useful but that the committee still wants explicit sampling plans and confirmation of which wells will be included. The committee asked staff to schedule a site meeting in March that includes discussion of the 2025 sampling plan so the committee’s recommendations can be incorporated before fieldwork begins.
Ray agreed to draft the committee’s comments on the annual groundwater report and the PFAS sampling questions, circulate them for committee review, and submit the responses through town staff to appear in the public record. The comment submission deadline for the annual groundwater report was stated as Jan. 6 in the meeting materials; committee members also discussed an internal deadline to finalize related comments for the March site meeting.
