Public works staff said the city’s current Showmobile — a large, high-spec unit with a long service history — has had major systems replaced over the years (suspension, hydraulics, tires) and that the panels and siding now need replacement. Staff warned that a replacement vehicle of the quoted lower price would be substantially smaller and not directly comparable to the current Showmobile. The department also identified recurring uses for the asset including the Gratiot Cruise, Memorial Day Parade, summer parks concerts and occasional outside requests.
Council ultimately approved option 1: repair the existing unit for the estimated $19,244.36 and process a related budget amendment. Members noted the possibility of adjusting the Showmobile rental fee schedule to partially offset transport and staffing costs for outside users.
