The City of Homestead approved an emergency procurement request to replace 12 radiators at the McMahon Substation after staff reported an active leak in one radiator and long lead times for replacement parts. City staff said the work is intended to minimize disruption during the upcoming high-demand season.
Staff described the emergency as follows: "This is an emergency procurement, because of the lead time and one of the radiators is actively leaking. So really, time is of the essence to get this in place," the city manager said during the Committee of the Whole meeting. Staff reported there are two transformers at the McMahon Substation, six radiators per transformer, for a total replacement of 12 radiators and a fiscal impact of $148,000.
Council members recorded support for the emergency procurement and moved to approve the purchase. Vice Mayor Fletcher noted that, based on his questions, the per-unit cost on the current purchase was lower than prior purchases, an observation the manager confirmed.
Next steps Staff will proceed with the procurement and installation per the emergency authorization. The item was presented as informational at the Committee of the Whole and approved by motion during the meeting.
