Bay City commission asks governor to schedule special election for state Senate seat

The Bay City City Commission on April 7 approved a resolution from Commissioner Tenney asking the governor to promptly schedule a special election to fill the vacant 30th District state Senate seat.
Commissioner Tenney moved the resolution and Commissioner Coakley seconded. During roll call, Commissioner Prince announced an abstention for professional conflict of interest; the remaining commissioners who answered the clerk’s roll call recorded votes in favor. The clerk recorded the motion as carried.
Commissioner Tenney described the measure as nonpartisan and said it was aimed at restoring representation to the district. “Instead of saying, what if we lose? How about saying, what if we don’t fight?” Tenney said during debate. Several commissioners expressed support for promptly filling the seat to ensure constituents have legislative representation.
Commissioner Prince stated on the record that he was abstaining because of a professional conflict of interest. No amendments to the resolution were offered and no additional actions were recorded in the meeting minutes for that item.
The commission’s approval places a formal municipal request before the governor’s office; scheduling and administration of any special election are the responsibility of the state. The clerk closed the item and the commission moved on to other business.
