Johnson County staff to set local minimum wage at $13.02, effective July 1, 2025

County staff told the Board of Supervisors on April 2 that Johnson County's local minimum wage will increase to $13.02 per hour effective July 1, 2025, per the county's 2015 ordinance that ties annual adjustments to the Midwest Consumer Price Index.
"Starting in 2018, the ordinance requires that we reference the CPI, the consumer price index, specifically the Midwest Region for set increases and those build upon, each, subsequent year," said Erin (county staff), explaining the methodology and timing. She said the prior wage was $12.64 and that the Midwest CPI produced a 38-cent increase to $13.02 for 2025.
Erin acknowledged the statutory timing the ordinance sets for adopting the new rate by April 1 each year and apologized for the brief delay in circulating the change, saying staff would meet the requirement "by April 3." She asked supervisors if they were comfortable approving the wage at the formal meeting scheduled for the next day; supervisors signaled no objection.
The increase is informational until the board takes formal action at the scheduled formal meeting. Communications staff were prepared to publish notice and materials if the board approves the rate.
Ending: If the board votes at the formal meeting, the new wage will be effective July 1, 2025; staff will publicize the change and agencies and county departments will incorporate the rate into payroll and contracting as required.
