Cook County approves YMCA equipment refresh after board debate on costs and contract terms

The Cook County Board approved a proposal to update exercise equipment at the county-owned YMCA facility after staff reduced the scope and presented several pricing options.
Brooke Lessard, the county facilities lead, told commissioners she had trimmed an earlier $200,000 estimate down to two smaller purchases: a pin-weight and strength equipment purchase (about $36,006) and a lease for replacement cardio equipment (roughly $44,247.50 plus lease terms). Lessard said the lease includes a semiannual maintenance agreement and a refresh cycle every four to five years.
Board members thanked Lessard for negotiating lower bids. “I just want to thank Brooke for the work that he's done to get these costs down,” Commissioner Sullivan said, noting the project’s scope had been reduced from earlier estimates. Commissioners discussed reupholstering still-serviceable pieces and focusing purchases on equipment used most by older residents and frequent YMCA users.
Commissioners also asked for better reporting about how county funds are used under the YMCA contract. Commissioners noted the county pays for facility upkeep while the YMCA pays for operations; several commissioners requested regular demographic and usage reports so the board can evaluate the county’s investment. Deputy administrators and the county auditor confirmed that staff can provide usage data and line-item budget details under the existing contract.
The board approved the equipment purchases and the cardio equipment lease and directed staff to return with updated cost quotes on two additional pieces of equipment (a recumbent elliptical and a NuStep-style recumbent trainer) and any additional contract information the board requests. Commissioners said they expect more detailed budget and usage reports at the next meeting.
