Huntington committee recommends one-year municipal waste-disposal contract with Rumpke to full council

The Solid Waste Management Recycling Committee in April voted to recommend approval of Resolution 2025-R-39, authorizing the mayor to enter into a one-year contract with Rumpke of Ohio for municipal waste disposal services, and to forward the measure to the full City Council with a favorable recommendation.

Committee members heard from Mark Bates, the city's public works director, who summarized the competitive bid process. Bates said the purchasing division issued the request for bids on Feb. 5, 2025, set the bid deadline for March 28, 2025, and received three bids from two companies. He said the proposed contract would begin May 1, 2025, run for one year and include an option to renew for four additional one-year terms. "We're recommending that we enter into a contract with Rumpke of Ohio for the service," Bates said, and added that funding for the contract will come from the Sanitation Trash Contracted Services Fund budget.

Bates listed per-ton bids recorded in the procurement: Republic Services (Sycamore Landfill in Hurricane) at $38.50 per ton and Green Valley Landfill at $16.75 per ton. The transcript does not specify the per-ton amount offered by Rumpke of Ohio.

A committee member moved to recommend the resolution and another member seconded. All members present voted in favor; the motion passed at the committee level and the item will be forwarded to the full City Council with a favorable recommendation. The committee asked Council member Linda to sponsor the resolution before the full council.
