A Truck Works representative presented the county with resale and timing projections for rotating dump trucks, and the Choctaw County Commission agreed to delay a buying decision while staff gathers comparative auction and vendor data.
The representative said recent auction results show weaker resale values than in prior years and estimated “we would lose about $24,000 a piece” on five trucks if current trends hold. He advised the county that March is traditionally a stronger auction than September and that delivery timing could make September difficult for some vendors.
The commission’s discussion centered on balancing resale value, delivery dates and financing. Commissioner Cherry said the county should compare vendor proposals and auction results “so which way we’re the better off as it stands right now.” The chairman (name not specified) added, “I don’t want us to just sell to be selling or buy just to be buying. I don’t want it to make sense for us,” and asked staff to return with additional figures.
County staff identified several items for the next meeting: auction results from multiple vendors, comparable spec/pricing for the county’s preferred truck configuration, estimated resale values, and vendor delivery dates. Staff also said the county’s financing schedule (a payment due in October) makes timing a factor and that failing to secure the September sale could push purchases to the following March sale.
No formal vote was taken on purchases. The commission agreed to table procurement decisions pending the staff comparisons and proposals at the next meeting.
The commission also discussed engine types and body styles, and the representative noted that Cummins engines typically bring higher resale values than some other engine types being installed now. He cautioned auction guarantees can be unreliable and recommended the county verify vendor guarantees and delivery windows before committing.
Next steps: staff will prepare a written comparison of auction results, vendor proposal prices, projected resale values and delivery schedules for discussion at the commission’s next meeting.
