Choctaw County to update multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plan ahead of October deadline

Choctaw County’s emergency management official told commissioners the county’s multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plan will expire in October and that staff are coordinating with the state Emergency Management Agency and the regional council to update it.
The EMA representative said the county must update the plan every five years and that the county’s standalone plan (last done in 2020) will be revised and submitted to the state EMA by August. The EMA speaker said county staff will convene stakeholders and elected officials for a kickoff meeting and that they may opt next year to join a district multi-jurisdictional plan, which could be less costly.
The EMA official warned that without an adopted and approved hazard mitigation plan the county would not qualify for federal disaster funding following any qualifying natural disaster. Staff said they will reach out to Megan Blackwell and other regional council contacts, coordinate meetings (including trips to Camden as needed) and work to finish the plan in time to meet state deadlines.
