The Sayreville Police Department updated the council on two public‑safety incidents: a March 11 motel fire in which officers rescued a woman, and a March 17 search‑warrant arrest that the department says ties two local suspects to multiple burglaries.
Councilman Colace reported that on March 11 officers responded to a fire at the Gallery Motel, forced entry through a partially obstructed door, found a woman trapped in a bathroom and removed her. The woman was transported to Saint Barnabas Hospital; the officer who made entry was treated at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and has been discharged. Following an investigation, the borough reported that a woman has been charged with arson, assault, criminal mischief and related counts and was held in the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center.
Colace also told the council that on March 17, Sayreville police, working with the Middlesex County Special Operations Response Team, executed a search warrant and arrested two people alleged to be connected to a series of burglaries. The department identified one defendant as Samit Matthews, 19, charged with multiple counts including burglary and weapons offenses, and a second defendant, Kishon Zephyrin, 21, charged with receiving stolen property. Police said additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.
The council also said two firefighters who participated in the motel rescue will be recommended for commendation. Police reminded residents about a March 31 application deadline for the New Jersey Civil Service Commission law‑enforcement exam and urged the public to report suspicious activity.
