Sophomore class advisers request board support for fundraisers, flags and community service; student outlines volunteer plans

Class advisers Diane England and Kathy Smith told the board on April 14 that Romulus High School’s sophomore class is organizing fundraisers, community-service projects and planning for future class officers and senior-year activities.
"Currently, we've got about 3,000 in our account," Diane England said, describing funds managed previously by advisers and a faculty account. England and Smith outlined past fundraisers (an ice cream social held in 2019), ideas for future events (yard sales, bake sales, dodgeball fundraisers), and plans to purchase new U.S., Michigan and school flags because the current flags "are getting a little raggedy."
Student representative Jeffrey Foma said the class wants to volunteer locally — "helping our community by cleaning up days, volunteering in local places around Romelis, helping with the Thanksgiving Day drive, helping out Forgotten Harvest" — and discussed competitive donation drives between class floors. The advisers asked the board to help set expectations and support planning; board members encouraged the class to return with a detailed plan in January or sooner for a Thanksgiving (or spring) food drive and to let the board know logistics and any required district support.
Superintendent Dr. Edmondson, responding to England’s earlier statement that trips should remain in Michigan, said he would encourage out-of-state trips when feasible: "I do not wanna see a trip in Michigan... Get the money, do the dodgeball, whatever it takes, get them out of state. Our kids deserve it," he said.
Board President Laster asked the advisers to put the request on a future agenda (they asked to appear in January), and trustees offered to help with planning, fundraising rules and logistics.
Ending: The board invited the advisers and class representatives to return with a formal plan and timeline for fundraising and trip logistics; administration noted the district would require finalized transportation and chaperone plans before any out-of-state travel.
