Winton Woods board honors state-champion girls, athletes, artists and student award winners

Winton Woods City School Board President Smith and Superintendent Denny used the board—s March 31 meeting to present awards across athletics, arts and academics to students and staff from across the district.
The biggest athletic honor went to the Winton Woods High School girls varsity basketball team, which finished the season 27-0 and beat Anthony Wayne High School 70-55 to win the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Division II state championship on March 14 in Dayton. Superintendent Denny read the team—s record and coaching staff names and presented certificates to the roster and coaches, thanking them for representing the district. "Ladies, y'all earned this," Denny said.
The board also recognized the boys varsity basketball team for a 23-3 season, back-to-back Eastern Cincinnati Conference (ECC) championships, OHSAA district championship status and a regional runner-up finish. The board noted the boys team—s collective GPA of 3.1.
Wrestling received separate mentions: girls and boys qualifiers advancing to OHSAA district competition were named, as were coaches Jerome Whitaker (girls) and Rayshawn Armston (boys). The board singled out Damien Culver for receiving a National Wrestling Coaches Association character and leadership All-American recognition.
In the arts and individual awards, the board presented multiple campus art-gallery acknowledgements (honorable mentions, assistant principal selections, principal selections and superintendent picks) across primary, elementary and intermediate campuses. The Horace Mann Fine Arts Student of the Month went to Bella Vargas (4.2 weighted GPA). The Kiwanis Character Is Key resourcefulness award (sponsored by Green Hills Forest Park Kiwanis Club) went to kindergarten student Tyler Graves Powell; the Kiwanis Student of the Month went to junior Kyle Shue. The Skyline awards recognized Sydney Short (Student Athlete of the Month) and Carly Noble (Teacher of the Month) for March 2025.
Board members and the superintendent repeatedly emphasized that honorees were "student-athletes" and students first: Denny and President Smith highlighted collective GPAs and classroom achievement in remarks to the audience.
The recognitions portion concluded with photo opportunities and a recess before the business portion of the meeting.
