Council renames Mansfield Park to honor Doris J. Thompson after community push

The Tucson Mayor and Council unanimously approved renaming Mansfield Park to Doris J. Thompson Park following public comment from neighborhood leaders, historians and community advocates and a resolution presented by Council Member Dahl.
Speakers during the public-comment period and members of the Sugar Hill Neighborhood Association described Doris J. Thompson as a long-time neighborhood organizer, mentor to area youth and a driving force behind earlier neighborhood centers and services. Council Member Dahl noted the proposal was rooted in restorative recognition: the park’s former name had been associated with deed restrictions affecting the neighborhood decades earlier, and supporters said Thompson’s community work made her an appropriate honoree.
“Doris was a mother to a lot of kids, a positive influence,” professor Johnny Boynes said during public comment. Neighborhood residents recounted personal experiences of Thompson’s presence and service dating back decades.
Council Member Dahl moved the resolution to rename the park; a second was recorded and a roll-call vote showed unanimous support from council members present. The city will update signage and administrative records to reflect the new park name and coordinate with community members on a naming celebration and any interpretive material.
