Neighbors raised safety and code‑compliance concerns about a property at 601 South Winthrop where residents say multiple vehicles, a camper trailer and other items are routinely parked on the lot and adjacent street; code compliance confirmed it has received complaints and is working the case.
Multiple Spring Meadows residents told the Gilbert Town Council on April 8 that a corner property at 601 South Winthrop has become a neighborhood safety and nuisance concern because of numerous vehicles parked on the lot and on nearby streets.
Scott Detweiler said the property appears to be used for auto repair and that six to eight vehicles are typically parked on the property with another four to seven along Winthrop or Catapult. He said the corner is on a route used by school buses and that parked vehicles sometimes block sight lines.
Philip Jefferson, who identified himself as a resident of 601 South Winthrop, told the council he does not operate an auto repair business, that vehicles on the property are registered and insured, and that he and his family have felt harassed by neighbors. Lynn Clapper, another resident, reiterated safety concerns about large trucks limiting visibility at the corner, and Pam Saville said she and other neighbors have documented the situation with photographs and filed code complaints via the town’s 311 system.
Saville said the property often appears ‘‘like a junkyard’’ and that some vehicles and a camper trailer appear to remain stationary for long periods. She told the council that code‑compliance staff had contacted her and that complaints have been open more than four months.
Council members did not take formal action during the communications period. Town staff were not recorded as providing a detailed enforcement timeline during the meeting; residents said they had been told code compliance was ‘‘working on it.’’
