Council highlights home-rehab program and library elevator repair during workshop

Two community-service items drew attention at the March 11 workshop: a community development home-rehab program and a library facilities update.
Councilwoman Davila described a city home-rehabilitation program that allows homeowners to apply for repairs such as windows, roofing and boilers. Applicants can pick up forms at 125 Ellison Street on the second floor on Wednesdays after 10 a.m.; applications are reviewed and, if approved, projects come before the council for final action, Davila said. She thanked the Community Development director and staff for the program and said it has helped residents secure repairs.
On the library, Director Fleming reported the main library elevator’s parts were expected to arrive Tuesday, March 18, and said the elevator should be repaired shortly thereafter. Council members praised a Black History Month display in the library and encouraged the department to continue programming. Commissioner and other public speakers asked that the library receive stable funding; a number of speakers and council members urged that when the city receives state increases or outside revenues the appropriated city share for the library not be reduced.
Council members asked the administration for a written report on the home-rehab program—how many households have been helped, how CDBG funds were used and the program’s outcomes—and asked library staff and the administration to provide reports on library funding and service indicators.
Ending: The council moved the community development items to consent and asked staff for program and funding reports for future meetings. Library elevator repair was expected in March pending parts arrival.
