City and community groups outline MLK Day service event, scholarships and an arts roundtable

A community member announced that the MLK Day event at the Hub Teen Center will be a service day with programming from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., including sandwich and hygiene kit distribution, a coat drive, activities for all ages and volunteer opportunities for reading to youth. The event will honor community members Alvin Fair, Rudy Miller and Portia Alton.
An acting‑studio representative said full scholarships are available for young people aged 10–16 for Act 2 musical theater and in‑person acting classes; the representative said current enrollment skews toward girls and they hope to increase participation by boys.
Mike Tublin, Department of Human and Community Services staff, said the department will start a monthly arts roundtable on Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. in city hall council chambers to let local arts partners share updates and identify ways to collaborate. Tublin described the roundtable as an informal forum rather than a formal council meeting.
Other event notes included Spark Night on Feb. 6 to honor Black History Month and local theater programming in March produced by Teatro Esperanza based on oral histories; staff asked partners to share event details for the shared calendar.
