State awards $750,000 pilot to Kansas Legal Services for parent partners in Douglas County

TOPEKA, Kan., April 4 — Justice Melissa Standridge reported to the Children’s Cabinet that Kansas received a $750,000 grant to pilot a program placing parent partners with families in dependency cases in Douglas County. The pilot will be administered by Kansas Legal Services.
Standridge said the parent partners will be employed by Kansas Legal Services, not by the Department for Children and Families (DCF) or the court system, and will remain assigned to a parent throughout a case. The pilot will coordinate with the Family Resource Center in Douglas County to link parents to services the center provides; the Family Resource Center is funded by the Children’s Cabinet.
“We received this $750,000 grant for a program, and it’s actually going to be administered through Kansas Legal Services, for a pilot program in Lawrence, in Douglas County, for parents to have a parent partner assigned to them throughout the entire case,” Justice Standridge said.
Standridge described the arrangement as a community partnership intended to provide non‑affiliated, continuous support for parents during dependency proceedings; she said program implementation and partnerships are underway.
