Council reviews Fire Station 7 timeline, staffing impacts; asks staff to refine costs

City staff updated council April 10 on Fire Station 7 and related public‑safety facilities in the CIP. The project is in design and staff said construction is expected to occur in the FY26–27 timeframe, though final scheduling depends on bids and construction costs.
Jill Olson and staff told council that in the operating‑budget impact section they modeled the station opening in June 2027 and that “the staffing and deployment model for station 7 will necessitate six additional firefighters, taking the overall minimum daily staffing to 26 for all seven stations.” Council asked staff to refine construction estimates and to include projected personnel and operating impacts in the May operating‑budget workshop so members can evaluate tradeoffs in the FY25‑26 budget cycle.
Separately council discussed a PD facility training center listed in later CIP years; Police leadership said the proposed training space would allow in‑house defensive‑tactics and fitness training currently conducted off‑site. Council members asked for additional justification and timing for that project before final adoption.
