A Bike Patrol Officer with the Prescott Valley Police Department urged cyclists to wear properly fitted helmets, use front and rear lights, signal turns, ride with the flow of traffic and obey traffic laws, and asked drivers to provide at least three feet of clearance when passing.
The officer said, "always wear your helmet. The helmet should fit comfortably and sit flat on your head. It's your strongest protection against head injuries." He emphasized visibility: "A front white light and a rear red light are essential, especially when riding at dawn or dusk." The officer also recommended hand signals to communicate with drivers and other road users.
The announcement listed additional safety reminders: ride with the flow of traffic to stay visible, obey stop signs and red lights as cyclists are subject to the same traffic laws as motorists, and for drivers to "make sure there's at least 3 feet of clearance" when passing a cyclist.
The officer closed by encouraging safe, enjoyable rides: "So remember, whether you're commuting or cruising, stay safe and have fun. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone."
