Village Art Plaza grand opening, service awards and proclamations highlight Sunrise meeting

Commissioners honored teachers, youth athletes and city employees, opened the Village Art Plaza with a large community event and issued proclamations for Arbor Day, Autism Awareness, Child Abuse Prevention Month and RL Ferguson Day.
The April 8 Sunrise City Commission meeting included a series of community recognitions and the Village Art Plaza grand opening among ceremony and proclamation items.
Presentations and recognitions included: - Teacher-of-the-month awards for March and April to Jewel Hilt (Sandpiper Elementary), Kaylee Caldwell (Sawgrass Elementary) and Sonya Harvey Spence (Village Elementary). Staff and school principals described each teacher’s background and classroom contributions. - Youth athlete awards for March and April to travel-soccer athletes Zaniah Gonzaga and Alejandro Marquez and to baseball player Jackson Parker (Imagine Charter School). Jackson’s coach and representatives noted his batting statistics and that he is a childhood cancer survivor. - An outstanding performance award to Vernon Neely, operations supervisor in Leisure Services, credited with planning and activating the Village Art Plaza calendar and leading the plaza’s grand opening. - Retirement recognition for Marlene Gill, a permit service specialist with more than 37 years of service to the city, with remarks from community members and staff.
Commissioners also presented proclamations recognizing April 12 as Arbor Day, April 2 as Autism Awareness Day (and April as Autism Awareness Month), April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, and April 15 as RL Ferguson Day, to honor local artist Aurel (RL) Ferguson. Each proclamation text and supporting remarks were read into the record.
Mayor Michael J. Ryan and Leisure Services Director Kevin Picard thanked staff, artists and volunteers for the Village Art Plaza work and the large community turnout. The commission used the opportunity to stress ongoing accessibility and inclusion efforts and to encourage continued community activation of the plaza.
