HRC schedules scholarship selection, weighs school recognition plans and reports event participation

HRC staff told the Lexington Human Relations Commission on March 3 that the scholarship application has been sent to Lexington Senior High School, with a deadline of April 15, 2025, and that the commission will select recipients at its May 5, 2025 meeting. “The budget currently is $8,631.43,” HRC staff said.
Commissioners also discussed plans for a school recognition tied to middle-school awards day. Commissioners said the recognition has a $1,000 allotment; one commissioner said she would cover costs up front and request reimbursement because the school principal had not yet confirmed a date. Commissioners noted the middle-school awards schedule lists three time slots (9:00 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 1:50 p.m.) for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade ceremonies; commissioners expressed concern that awards-day timing might not allow a public presentation and said they would seek clarification from school staff.
HRC reported event participation and upcoming community events. The commission staffed a table at the city’s Black History Month program held Feb. 22, 2025, at Charles England Elementary School; Commissioners Patty Small and Patricia King assisted. Staff said the city’s multicultural festival is scheduled May 3, 2025, at the Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Staff also said the HRC funding request approved at the prior meeting was submitted to the finance department and that a bylaws-review committee (Commissioners Charlotte Edwards, Pam Harvey, Pamela McAfee and Surratt) is reviewing commission bylaws; there are no updates to the HRC ordinance.
Commissioners discussed whether retreat planning and budget allocation should be handled as a separate agenda item in future meetings. No formal motions were recorded on the scholarship schedule, recognition plans or event participation during this meeting.
