HRC chooses Lexington Middle School for 2025 recognition day, sets aside $1,000

The Lexington Human Relations Commission on Feb. 3 voted to recognize Lexington Middle School for the 2025 Lexington City Schools Recognition Day and approved a $1,000 budget allocation for medallions, certificates, food and related supplies.

A motion to recognize Lexington Middle School was made, seconded and approved by voice vote. Commissioners discussed whether to continue the previous format — an evening ceremony with teacher introductions and a simple meal — or to integrate recognition into regular end-of-year award events. Several commissioners said a separate evening event helped the commission raise awareness about its role in the community.

After discussing estimated attendance and past practices, Commissioner Pamela McAfee moved that the commission set aside $1,000 for certificates, medallions, food and other supplies; Commissioner Patricia King seconded. The motion passed by voice vote.

Commissioners asked that a small committee be formed to plan the event, including event logistics, number of guests per student and food arrangements. The commission agreed to target late May for the recognition event, consistent with prior years’ timelines for school award ceremonies, and said dates must be coordinated with school administration.

Commissioners reiterated that teachers will select students for the award based on criteria used previously: “displaying a positive attitude, leadership, strength of character, humanity, kindness, and inclusiveness,” as read aloud by staff when reviewing the award certificate language.

Volunteers were sought for the planning committee; several commissioners volunteered during the meeting.
