The Harmony Public Schools Board of Trustees on March 22 approved 2025'26 academic calendars across seven HPS regions, authorized a resolution to submit staff development day waivers to the Texas Education Agency, and adopted the consent agenda, the board said.
During the academic calendar presentation, district staff outlined region-specific calendars: Central Texas campuses will follow a calendar with about 173 instructional days; North Texas campuses will use two calendars (DFW and Waco) with a first day in August and last day in May; South Texas campuses (San Antonio, Laredo, Brownsville) and West Texas campuses (El Paso; Midland/Odessa; Lubbock) will each follow regional calendars with instructional day counts reported at about 173 days; Houston North and Houston West calendars were reported with 173 and 174 instructional days respectively; Harmony Public Schools —' HOUSTON SOUTH was presented with 174 instructional days.
Presenting staff said many HPS calendars align with local independent school districts to reduce attendance impacts and that local campuses schedule staff professional development days either at the campus or district level. The board voted to approve the set of calendars as presented.
Trustees also approved a board resolution to submit annual staff development day waivers to the Texas Education Agency to use the maximum allowable 2,100 instructional minutes for staff development across all seven HPS districts; most districts will use five professional-development days, and Houston North was reported to plan for six PD days. The board motion to approve the waiver submission passed.
The board previously approved the consent agenda earlier in the meeting, which included ratification of prior board minutes (Feb. 22, 2025) and approval of finance and academic committee minutes from March 8, 2025. The transcript records that Dr. Argan recused himself from the consent agenda item.
The board entered closed session under Government Code 551.071 (consultation with legal counsel), 551.082 (student records), and 551.074 (personnel matters) to discuss a districtwide intruder-detection audit report for a campus and pending legal matters. The meeting returned to open session at 10:02 a.m.; the board stated no action was taken in closed session.
The meeting adjourned shortly after the closed session.
