Mayor Grier Hopkins urges commission participation in borough comprehensive plan update

Mayor Grier Hopkins briefed the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission on the borough’s comprehensive plan update and asked the commission to help gather senior input for the planning process.

Hopkins said the borough is preparing a 20-year comprehensive-plan update and encouraged commissioners to complete and circulate the online survey at fnsb.gov/compplan. He described a series of regionally based open houses — including Pleasant Valley, Pioneer Park, North Pole, Goldstream and others — scheduled through early February and said the plan team will add additional events targeted to the Alaska Native community and other neighborhoods.

The mayor said commissions across the borough are reviewing their mission and direction, and he described the administration’s intent to coordinate a broader effort this spring and summer to clarify the purpose and priorities of advisory commissions. He said the borough, as a second-class borough, has limited statutory powers but can facilitate cross-jurisdictional collaboration among city, borough, state and community organizations to address long-term issues such as housing and health-care access for an aging population.

Hopkins noted demographic projections referenced earlier in the meeting and urged commissioners to evaluate how the comprehensive plan can incorporate senior needs, including housing, transportation and multi-generational support.
